Does the horse need to have a rug on during the flight?
It is always about 17°C in the cargo hold of an airplane and our professional grooms control the temperature of the aircraft to ensure maximum comfort for the horses.
Inside the container itself it is quite a bit warmer, depending on the number of horses. If at all, only a very thin transport rug is recommended.
Are the usage of transport boots and the removal of horse shoes respectively, compulsory?
We would always recommend that hind shoes were removed prior to the flight and front boots (not bandages) were worn. If the horse is used to boots all round then we would recommend them.
If, however, boots are not usually worn, it is often better to leave these off the horse.
Do the horses need to be sedated before the flight?
This is not necessary.
It is recommended to refrain from feeding the horses up to a few hours before the flight. That way they are hungry during take-off and will distract themselves by eating hay.
How large is the flight container?
The containers of the aircraft models B747 and MD11 are standardised and have the same dimensions:
Length: 294 cm
Width 234 cm
Height 232 cm
Area for horses:
188 cm x 234 cm
Space per horse if 3 horses are in one container: Width approximately 75 cm
Space per horse if 2 horses are in one container: Width approximately 115 cm
Are mare in foal allowed to be flown?
The mare should have at least another 8 weeks until the approximate foaling date.
Do you also transport old horses?
There is no fixed age restriction for animal transport.
However, your horse should be in an overall healthy condition and Peden Bloodstock will liaise with your veterinary surgeon to determine this at the start of the pre-export process.
How long before take-off do the horses need to be delivered to the airport?
This depends on each individual airline and Peden Bloodstock will liaise with you regarding the times for the horses to be at the airport. This can vary from one hour for short haul flights or up to 4 hours for long haul or KLM flights.
If wished the horses can also be stabled near-by the airport before the departure.
Are there hay/hay nets and water canisters/buckets available at the airport for my horse?
Airlines like KLM and Martinair provide hay nets, water canisters and water buckets. Lufthansa on the other hand does not do this. In this case one hay bale and one canister of water and one bucket must be brought along for each horse.
Can I accompany my horse/s during the flight?
On some occasions this may be possible and should be discussed with our offices.
More information on this topic can be found in the menu under flight attendance.
What is CEM?
CEM is the abbreviation for Contagious Equine Metritis(contagious veneral disease of horses).
How is the dimensional weight for equipment calculated?
The dimensional weight concerns the ratio between the space that a package takes up and its actual weight.
Calculations of the dimensional weight are based on the volumetric standards of the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
In the case that the dimensional weight exceeds the actual weight, the dimensional weight is being charged.
